Night Lights: Weekend Wrapup Nov. 5-7

Having First Friday fall the weekend after a major holiday should be against the law.
Apparently, judging by the noticeably smaller crowd on First Friday this month, I’m not the only one who was thinking this way. I arrived early in Chinatown, partly because I was playing tour guide for some family friends from out of town, and the crowd was so sparse at first that I thought I’d missed the memo that First Friday had been canceled. Actually, one of my favorite stops, Shop, Bop & Grind in the Chaplain Lane alley, WAS canceled, because (understandably) none of the vendors wanted to deal with the rain.
Fortunately, I’d had dinner already, and fortunately, the late-night crowd still showed up to go clubbing despite the rain, so I had someone to take photos of. Here’s the gallery:
Insider tip: Just FYI, next month at First Friday, thirtyninehotel’s gonna require an RSVP to Firstfriday@thirtyninehotel.com. Apparently, they’re trying to cut down on unruliness and the like after some problems last month. Will it work? Maybe. While the RSVP doesn’t necessarily apply to regulars, if you don’t go there often, it wouldn’t hurt to shoot them an email (it does get you a discount off cover).
One good thing is that with the sparser crowds, I got to pop into more places, and ended up setting a new record for myself, covering about six galleries and seven or so bars and clubs. Yeesh! Yeah, you bet I was tired at the end of the night.
What happened Saturday? Thank god for Twitter.
First, as a favor to J.J., owner of J.J. Dolan’s, I dropped in on the fundraiser he was emceeing at Mercury Bar for the family of one of his friends. The poor kid had an accident that resulted in a painful (and somewhat embarrassing) injury to his urethra. Seriously though… where else, in my entire career, would I get one of these?
Afterward, I stuck around briefly for Joe Agogo’s F*** First Friday, a monthly event held every First Saturday with live bands and DJs. Yay, hipsters.

Golfcart Rebellion, one of the bands at FFF.
By the way, if anyone sees or knows anything about Josh 86’s stolen stuff… a Gibson Les Paul guitar that was his baby, plus pedals, gig bag, etc, please get in touch with him. There is a reward. There is also not a gang of angry Samoans, punks, bikers and indie kids waiting to get their hands on the perpetrator.
After Mercury Bar, I bounced over to Apartment3’s Hello Kitty party (a themed birthday party for Lesley Dadez that spilled over to the rest of the lounge), where the guys were wearing pink, the servers were wearing kitty ears, and there were cute party favors all over the place:
Yeah, that was pretty much it. Weekend-in-a-nutshell format doesn’t really do it justice, but there you are!
