New(ish) eats: Yakiniku Lulurara
As far as I’m concerned, there can never be enough Korean barbecue places. So I was happily surprised when I stumbled upon the newest one, Yakiniku Lulurara. After a movie, a friend and I were driving around looking for a place to eat when we both mentioned that we hadn’t had Korean barbecue in a while. For me, that means grilling meats, shots of soju and a feeling of comfort. As we drove past the usual places, we noticed Yakiniku Lulurara on Keeaumoku Street and decided to give it a shot. An hour and a half later, we walked out full, slightly buzzed and completely satisfied. It was so good I invited a group of my work friends to check it out, since many weren’t familiar with this type of dining.
The 14 of us got together one Friday night to do some damage. Here’s how it went down.
What makes Yakiniku Lulurara different from other Korean barbecue places is that there are no banchan or side dishes included with the meal. These banchan are standard at any other Korean restaurant, but owner Chung Hee Chong says she doesn’t offer the free appetizers so she can keep meat costs down. Sure enough, the prices for meat are about half of what you’d pay at other Korean restaurants, while at nearly the same quantity. I’d say that’s a pretty fair trade off.
