Mu‘umu‘u Re-do

The trendy Blue Geisha Vintage Boutique turns an old mainstay into a hot new look.
This vintage store specializing in mini mu‘umu‘u first opened when owner Cathy Reed needed to clear the place she’d been using as storage for her online business. When she could no longer open the door to her storage place, near Wailana Coffee House, she decided to simply transform it into a boutique.

“I didn’t think there’d be any business in the neighborhood,” says Reed, “but I ended up making more than I ever had online.”

So Reed kept the store open, and today her clothes move faster than the hips of a Tahitian dancer. Her store offers vintage clothes, with everything from restyled European gowns to Christian Dior to ’60s shirts. But the most popular item is the mini mu‘umu‘u. Reed takes old dresses and gives the seasoned favorite a sassy new cut. The familiar bright colors stay the same, but the long, swaying skirt now stops a few inches above the knee. Prices range from $30 to $80.

You’ll find Reed doing all the sewing and alterations in the store. Pay her a visit at 1860 Ala Moana Blvd., Suite 108, or call 944-5025.
