Dazzling, naturally occurring mosaics of sand drawn from Hawai‘i, North America, meteorites and the moon, the photos in The Secrets of Sand (Quarto Publishing Group, $27) are truly worlds of their own. Dr. Gary Greenberg of the University of Hawai‘i Institute for Astronomy joined Carol Kiely and Kate Clover to pool their expertise in deep-focus, X-ray and scanning electron microscope photography; their descriptions of each sand’s creation equally mesmerize and inform. Clockwise from left: sand from Maui’s Hāmoa Beach, as is top image; from Haleakalā Crater, Maui; and green olivine from South Point, Big Island.
