Kona Abalone opens in Ala Moana
If you’ve been to the farmer’s markets around town, you’ve seen the booth with the freshly grilled, live abalone from Kona. It’s wildly popular with Japanese tourists, who know it’s a delicacy and not nearly as inexpensive at home.
Well, now you can get that abalone, seven days a week. The new Kona Abalone store opened yesterday at Ala Moana Center’s Makai Market food court, full of abalone gifts and freshly made bentos.
I had toured the Big Island Abalone Corporation’s farm on Hawaii Island last summer with Kamehameha Schools, and one of the great things about this business is the fact that they are farm-raised, so this prized delicacy is abundant and accessible to restaurants and consumers without draining the ocean’s resources.
