What?

The sandwiches you usually see at a convenience store are all obligatory varieties and a potpourri of protein. There’s tuna, egg salad and PB&J. You’ll also see ones with cold cut favorites — turkey, ham or turkey AND ham. None of those will catch your eye.

But right now at 7-Eleven is one that deserves your attention — the Craft Chicken BLT Salad Sandwich. This limited edition addition to the fresh food section features a chicken BLT salad and lettuce on squaw bread.

Every single thing you need to know

To be honest, I had no idea what squaw bread was. To educate myself, I went down a squaw bread rabbit hole that took me all over the internet, from an article about the political correctness of its name to a bunch of recipes to forum posts about chain restaurants that offer it. If I were to squeeze all that knowledge into a dinner roll-sized definition, it’s a slightly sweet, dark, rye-based bread that has German and Native American influences.

Its slight sweetness complements the chicken salad filling of ground chicken, diced chicken, mayonnaise, bacon bits and sun-dried tomatoes, and is definitely a step above the carb slices on the other sandwiches. It’s decent enough that, if you experience bread-only bites, it won’t be so bad.

Oh, just to clarify, those red bits you see in the photos of the chicken salad are the tomatoes. Sorry, bacon fiends. But there’s a good amount of bacon bits that provide a nice smoky flavor that makes it tastier than the standard chicken salad. The sun-dried tomatoes do add a little sweetness to the creamy and smoky party, but they also bring the unpleasant party game, What Am I Chewing On?

While taking my first few bites, my mouth detected a texture that seemed like chicken cartilage. Chick happens, I thought, and some non-meat got through, but I noticed it again. After digging through my mouth, I discovered it was the sun-dried tomatoes. Maybe they should’ve been chopped up a bit more. But once I figured that out, I began to enjoy the sandwich’s great flavor.

Finally, the ingredient I’m sure you have been waiting to read about is the lettuce. Well, I’m happy to report it’s green, fresh and fulfills the “L” in BLT.

Verdict

7-Eleven’s Craft Chicken BLT Salad Sandwich is the best sandwich the convenience store offers. It has a great flavor that stands out among all the tuna, egg salad, PB&J and cold cuts it sits with.
