Just Opened and Coming Soon


New and noteworthy spots are opening up fast and furious. Here's quick look at some of the new spots that just opened or are coming soon:

Just Opened:

  • Grondin, a French and Latin kitchen, is an adorable bistro in the middle of Chinatown. It opened about a month ago and just started serving lunch today from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. Croque madame anyone? Read more about the partners and chefs involved in Grondin here.

  • Fresh Cafe Downtown, which took over the former Indigo spot, is open for pizzas and drinks. The cafe area is not yet ready, but from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can get pizzas (more like flatbreads) to go, and from 4 to 11 p.m., grab a drink and pizza at the bar.

  • The owners of Real a Gastropub have opened a new craft beer bar in Kaimuki: Brew'd. People are reporting waits of two hours to get first crack at the specialty beers on tap and in bottles (the selection of which is only rivaled only by Real). The menu, available from 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., is small plates of meatloaf sliders, pork adobo poutine, and a "beeramisu," made with chocolate stout. And for all you Game of Thrones geeks, Brew'd just tapped the Ommegang Fire and Blood Red Ale. (See you there!)

  • Snackbox, a pared-down version of Mark Noguchi's Lunchbox at the Hawaiian Airlines cafeteria, is now open within Pad in Kakaako. It's a grab-and-go counter with a short list of sandwiches (egg salad, turkey cranberry and a kale wrap) and salad in a jar.

Coming Soon

  • The terrific takeout spot Tucker and Bevvy (read about it here) will soon open a full-service, sit down restaurant, Tucker and Bevvy: Breakfast, in the old Sam Choy space on Kapahulu. "We'll be doing Sydney-inspired food, but for breakfast," says owner Cecily Ho Sargent. "It's influenced by healthy eating—what's hot in Sydney is really just what's healthy." I'm definitely looking forward to more of that in this town, especially from the hands of Hoku Kupihea, formerly chef de cuisine of the much-missed Downtown at the HiSAM.
  • Lucky Belly partners Jesse Cruz and Dusty Grable are opening a new spot right across the street, taking the place of Amy's Place. Livestock Tavern will serve seasonal American comfort food, Grable says, and do for that genre what Lucky Belly did for casual Asian cuisine. He's not promising a date yet, but the chefs and bar managers for the new restaurant are being finalized at this very moment.
