Jagoism – pop art meets fashion

A lively medley of art forms came together this past Friday at NextDoor featuring Jagoism, hosted by Chanel Tanaka and Artisabridge. Doug Jago, a highly respected luxury visual merchandiser by day, melds his love for creating pop art with his keen eye for fashion. His pop art includes geometric shapes, collages of personal family photos, iconic Americana images and real objects such as zippers. Clearly influenced by Andy Warhol and 1960s youth culture, Jago’s acrylic paintings are fun and surreal featuring hidden self-portraits within the cubes, cones and circles.
His other art featured that evening were wearable art pieces. A little background, I was introduced to his designs back in 2010, and soon after, he was one of the featured designers in my first big fashion show, Chic in the City.

His designs captivated the imagination of the attendees and personally; I haven’t seen anyone in Hawaii do what he does since. “He takes his favorite garments that may have a slight imperfection and makes them new again,” explains Elliot Domalewski, Jago’s business partner. “By painting on the these garments, he gives them new life and new expression.” If you missed the launch event on Friday, Jago’s paintings will be on display throughout the month of June.
