It’s Dinner and a Show in Downtown Honolulu

Hawai‘i Theatre partners with Downtown restaurants to offer dinner-and-movie pairings at a new festival starting tomorrow.

Ditch the popcorn.

Hawai‘i Theatre’s new festival pairs food-related films with dinner at Downtown restaurants starting tomorrow.

Called Screen Cuisine, this twist on the dinner-and-a-show concept works like this: Dine at a participating restaurant, then see a movie that relates to what you just ate.

And a bonus: The first dinner, which will be held tomorrow, is at Palate Craft & Eatery on Bethel Street, a new restaurant by Troy Terorotua and Lisa Kim, co-owners of Real a Gastropub and Brew’d Craft Pub. (It occupies the space of former Soul de Cuba.)

“The menu is similar to what we do at the other restaurants,” Terorotua says. “But we’re trying new flavors and offering lighter fare and grain salads. Again, it’s unique pub food. We’re trying to create something for downtown that’s not there right now.”

You can peek into the restaurant’s vibe tomorrow, as it will serve three small plates inspired by the movie, The Hundred-Foot Journey, the 2014 film about an inspired Indian chef who opens a restaurant across the street from a famous Michelin Star French restaurant. (It’s the movie pairing for the dinner tomorrow night.)

“We thought we’d combine those two together,” Terorotua says about the inspiration for the menu. “And we wanted to make a really unique splash for the opening of Screen Cuisine.”

The first plate will be a pakora, a popular Indian snack that’s basically an onion fritter, but using cauliflower with some French lentils and fresh mango chutney dotted with dried mango pieces and tandoori pine nuts.

The second plate is a variation of a crêpe, filled with butter chicken, and paired with a petite salad.

The final plate is lamb marsala with ratatouille with slices of roasted zucchini, eggplant and tomato, with palak paneer (a dish consisting of spinach, tomato gravy and garlic).

Cost for dinner and the movie—and dessert at Cake Envy—is $50 per person. It includes either a special cocktail, a draft beer or glass of wine at Palate. Dinner starts at 5 p.m., with the movie at 8 p.m.

The Pig & The Lady will be the restaurant partner on Saturday, accompanied by the screening of Chocolat, with dishes including foie gras bon bons, roasted quail, and a flambé of chocolate with cacao-scented smoke and flavors of s’mores.
