HONOLULU Magazine and Jana Lam Team Up to Bring You the Tropical Christmas Stockings You Never Knew You Needed

Jana Lam’s workshop was bustling this season as her team of elves was making stockings bright, in collaboration with HONOLULU Magazine. Trust us when we say, yule love it.

When we started throwing ideas around for a holiday-ish collaboration, one in particular kept hanging around—a stocking. We decided we needed to team up with a designer who had a magical, joyful and local touch. Someone who would create something that St. Nick would sell an elf for. Welcome designer Jana Lam. We met with Lam, a textile artist known for her mastery at mixing bold hues with charming Island graphics, to go over our (merry and) bright idea.

“OK, so I can’t lie. I made a ‘meh’ face when the stocking came up,” Lam says. “I didn’t grow up hanging stockings at Christmastime, so it’s never been a thing for me. It took me talking to my team and them being super excited about it to make me think it could be a cool project.”

A few days after our meeting, Lam’s team created a prototype of the stocking. The oohs and aahs from people who see it resemble what you hear when a hedgehog eats cake on Instagram. It’s over-the-top cuteness. The stocking has Lam’s whimsical stamp—sea flowers. The two-tone holiday hues are perfect: red/white and green/white combos. And (insert air horn noise), it’s reversible! Boom. We are officially part of the Jana Lam fam.

This design partnership is our third this year. We teamed up with Fighting Eel and released a HONOLULU tee in the spring, and at our Best of Honolulu Festival we launched our collab with VH07V. The responses for all were incredible—our own teammates had a hard time getting their hands on the pieces—and we credit our beloved designers for their extraordinary talent and creativity. We look forward, and you should too, to collabs to come in 2020.
