The Hawaii International Film Festival announced its jury winners at an awards ceremony Tuesday evening at the Halekulani. The Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Narrative Feature went to director Shim Sung-bo for his film, “Haemoo,” which tells the story of a fishing-boat crew smuggling illegal Chinese immigrants into Korea.

The award for Best Documentary Feature went to “We are the Giant,” directed by Greg Barker, which reveals the lives and struggles of ordinary people as they fight for justice and freedom.

The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) award went to Kanu Behl for his film, “Titli,” which features the criminal underworld of Dehli and the main character’s attempt to escape it.

“A Girl Who Walks Home at Night,” directed by Ana Lilly Amirpour and starring Sheila Vand, received an honorable mention. The tale of a first skateboarding hijab-clad female vampire made a strong impression with the HIFF jury.
