Even though Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota’s team lost to Ohio State in the recent championship game, his fans take pride in the St. Louis High School graduate for winning the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
Want to meet Mariota? He is scheduled to accept the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award this Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
The PCC and Polynesian Football Hall of Fame will also be unveiling a new Hall of Fame exhibit, honoring Polynesia’s greatest football players, coaches and contributors.
The new 2015 Hall of Fame inductees scheduled to attend include former Detroit Lions lineman Luther Elliss, former San Francisco 49ers center Jesse Sapolu, former Washington Redskins player Ray Schoenke and former New England Patriots player Russ Francis. The family and friends of the late Patriots running back Mosi Tatupu and Dallas Cowboys star Mark Tuinei are planning to attend in their place. And of course, Mariota will be a special guest of honor.
If you’re a big Mariota fan, get there early. He’s expected to leave the event shortly before the enshrinement ceremony at noon.
10:20 a.m., Hall of Fame Exhibit dedication; 11 a.m., enshrinement ceremony; 1:30 p.m. autograph session; 2 p.m. inductee canoe parade, $25, Polynesian Cultural Center, 55-370 Kamehameha Highway, polynesianfootballhof.org, 293-3333.
