Heading Over the Edge

Hear that noise? Those are my teeth chattering, my knees knocking and my heart thumping. Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating… a bit. But I’m definitely feeling anxious about Friday, when I’ll be rappelling down 31 stories of the Sheraton Waikiki, to help promote the third annual Over the Edge of Waikiki, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Hawaii.
The opening scene from “Cliffhanger” keeps replaying in my mind, but it’s good fear. I’m actually looking forward to throwing my body over one of the tallest buildings in Waikiki. I love roller coasters, driving fast, and hiking perilous trails such as Olomana Three Peaks and Pu’u Hapapa.
So when this opportunity arose, I instantly accepted. I’ve always wanted to bungee jump or skydive, and now I have a chance to do so. Still, when I told my father, he looked at me puzzled, and just asked: “Why?”
Well, aside from satisfying my own thrill-seeking ways, this endeavor supports a worthy cause. I’m thrilled to be one of a few local media people taking part in Friday’s event — a preview event for the actual Over the Edge of Waikiki, which takes place Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki.
On Nov. 5, more than 120 people will be rappelling down the hotel to raise money for the Special Olympics Hawaii Holiday Classic, an event held every December, where Hawaii athletes with disabilities compete in basketball, bowling and bocce ball. Rappellers must raise at least $1,000 each; those who raise more are awarded prizes such as Sheraton Waikiki gift cards and free hotel stays.
For more information on this fun, unique event, check out the Special Olympics Hawaii Facebook page or follow them on Twitter @sohawaii with hashtag #overtheedgehi.
Melissa Chang of Nonstop Honolulu will be live streaming the event on Saturday and videotaping my descent on Friday. Be sure to lower your volume settings so you’re not deafened by my screams of terror.
