HawaiiCon 2016

About 1,200 fans turned out for the Big Island’s third annual HawaiiCon celebrated the 50th anniversary of “Star Trek” last weekend. Special guest celebs included actors Walter Koenig (Chekov) and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) from the original series and Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry Jr., the son of legendary science fiction producer and “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, also appeared.

Also appearing were other Sci Fi celebrities like Tahmoh Penikett (Helo) and Kandyse Mcclure (Dualla) from “Battlestar Galactica,” award-winning cartoonist and illustrator Bill Morrison, who worked on “The Simpsons” and “Futurama,” and Jane Wiedlin, founding member of the all-female rock band The Go-Gos, who is working on a science fiction musical called “Lady Robotica: The Space Opera.”

Scientists from NASA and other real-life technology fields gave talks on different science topics, rounding out the intimate Con.
