Hawaii Sailor Raises Millions for an Around-the-World Race
Why join someone else's sailing team when you can create your own?
To win an around-the-world sailing race, it takes more than a fast boat, a skilled crew and a nine-month supply of Dramamine. It takes a dream. Oh yeah, and about $21 million.
At least that's how much Mark Towill, a local kid from Kaneohe, and his college sailing buddy Charlie Enright scraped up for their bid to win the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, which starts in October. Instead of trying out for an existing team, the young entrepreneurs built their own team from scratch (with substantial backing from Turkish medical device manufacturer Alivimedica).
Towill and Enright have dreamed of racing around the world since they met in 2006 while making the Disney documentary Morning Light, which follows a team of young sailors racing from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
