Modern Design Fans Will Love These Hawai‘i-Made Rattan Lamps
Good Lamp Co.’s lamps feature clean lines and minimalist, Scandinavian vibes.
If you found yourself on Nu‘uanu Avenue in the past few months, you might have caught a glimpse of Brennen Cunningham through the giant picture window of vintage shop Single Double’s artist-in-residence space. There, the Good Lamp Co. woodworker has been busy cutting, steaming and coaxing rigid rattan rods into the wavy, arched structures of our new favorite lamps.

Minimal yet whimsical, the striking floor and table lamps are outfitted with simple white oak bases and cords artfully hidden in channels in the wood. Cunningham often skips shades in favor of exposed bulbs. “I use Edison bulbs—they give off a warm, mellow, homey light,” he says. But he’ll sometimes play with textural, slightly diaphanous rice paper, which contrasts nicely with the smooth wood, and sleek acrylic. And he opts to keep the rattan natural. “In that state, it’s surprisingly light and clean looking. Dark stained rattan is what everyone is used to. I wanted to offer a modern treatment of that traditional material.”
