The tabi toes have touched down. That can only mean one thing—Hawai‘i finally has its first Maison Margiela store. Fans of the Parisian avant-garde fashion house, founded in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, can now snap up its women’s and men’s apparel, leather goods, accessories and fragrances at the luxury brand’s sleek 1,300-square-foot space at Ala Moana Center.

Since taking the helm in 2014, creative director British couturier John Galliano has built on the brand’s foundation of nonconformity, exploring the concepts of genderless fashion and unconscious glamour to stylish effect. Case in point, this season’s fresh takes on two Margiela classics—the minimal-yet-plush Glam Slam bag, quilted to mimic matelassé, a style of hand-stitched quilts created in Marseille, and the cult-favorite tabi shoes, inspired by 15th century Japanese split-toe socks, updated as cylindrical-heeled ankle boots, handsome patent brogues and distressed court shoes.
