Guidelines for Freelancing With HONOLULU Magazine
HONOLULU Magazine is an award-winning title that dates back to 1888. We provide a smart, sophisticated owner’s manual to the city, aimed at educated, affluent residents. We are not a travel magazine about Hawai‘i. Our goals are to motivate our readers to make the most of everything the city offers and inspire them to make their own lives and their city better. To do so, we are responsible for reporting hot-button stories as well as lighter, reader-service features.
Many of HONOLULU Magazine’s feature stories, columns and departments are written by staff writers and regular contributing editors. HONOLULU does, however, use freelance writers on a wide variety of subjects, including personality profiles, history, sports, politics and lifestyle trends, but all must be related to Hawai‘i. HONOLULU is a regional magazine and not just limited to the city of Honolulu; stories on Neighbor Island subjects or statewide issues are welcome. We do not accept unsolicited fiction and do not publish poetry.
QUERIES
Freelance writers are encouraged to submit a query letter or manuscript to info@honolulumagazine.com. A query letter should briefly explain the subject you would like to write about and list your qualifications for treating the subject. Enclose two or three clips of published material if available. Length will be determined when assignments are discussed.
PAYMENT
Feature stories: Starting around $600, up to about $1,800. Columns, departments and short features: $100 to around $600. HONOLULU Magazine pays 30 days after the publication of the piece.

RIGHTS
Upon acceptance, HONOLULU Magazine retains first and exclusive license for 12 months from the date of publication to reproduce all and/or any part of the published Works, and distribute it by all means and media now known or hereafter discovered, including but not limited to print, microfilm and electronic media as well as the right to display and transmit the work publicly online. After 12 months, all rights secured in the published Works shall revert to the Freelancer—except that already existing Web pages may remain on aio Media Group’s Web sites and that aio Media Group will be able to publish (and reuse in the same manner and to just as great an extent) the published Works or portions of it for archival, historical or editorial purposes.
