May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii, and a free concert by Na Leo Pilimehana on Waikiki Beach will be part of an event celebrating it.
Called “May Day Waikiki—Beach Boys, Memories and Music,” the new event will pay homage to beach boys past and present, and to everyone who has made Waikiki Beach their final resting place.
After a kahu-led, all-faiths service, Na Leo Pilimehana will perform on a floating stage anchored in the water behind the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
The three members of the group—Nalani Choy, Lehua Kalima Heine and Angela Morales—are childhood friends who have performed as Na Leo Pilimehana for 30 years. The group has released 18 CDs and won more than 20 Hoku Awards.
Hosted by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and organized by the Kalaimoku Group, the event is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, from 3-5 p.m.
The radio station Hawaiian 105.1 KINE will broadcast the event live.
“May Day Waikiki—Beach Boys, Memories and Music” is part of a larger effort to highlight the talent and traditions of local musicians and dancers, to elevate May Day festivies and to boost tourism inHawaii. It is also part of the Hawaiian Music Concert Series organized by the Kalaimoku Group to showcase Hawaiian artists throughout the year.
