Fortune Seller

Shoppers with a nose for the new have discovered a tiny fashion outpost in our own back yard.

With
fur pillows, a girly pink décor and rows of sleek displays, MisFortune looks intimidating
and expensive. In fact, we walked by it twice before we got the courage to go
inside. But it turns out that this 5-month-old boutique offers style goods, without
snooty attitudes or ridiculous price tags.

Owner Natasha Briley opened
this, her first store, last summer. But first, she got to go shopping. For a year
and a half, Briley combed through the United States, Indonesia, China, Brazil,
Hong Kong and Tahiti, investigating textiles and looking for clothing lines that
weren’t carried here in Hawai’i.

The store, located in Ward Centre,
has prices from $7 to $289-most are around $70. Bestsellers include apparel by
C. Ronson and Eisbar, dresses by China Doll and handbags and wallets by T-bags.
Also look for gifts (candles based on your astrological sign) and cool accessories
(check out the Goth/Catholic-inspired necklaces and belt buckles by Virgins, Saints
and Angels). There’s also creative jewelry by local artist Ginger 13, who mixes
natural (shells) with the tongue-in-cheek (tiny dice).
