We knew about the shrimp and the oysters, but did you know they have all of these?

We’re getting out of town to check out what’s hot and happening around O‘ahu this summer. The first leg of our Foodie Field Trip series takes us along Kamehameha Highway from Kailua to Kahuku, with ‘onolicious stops along the way.

We’re rolling through Ka‘a‘awa bound for Kahuku as Kamehameha Highway carves its way up the Windward coast. On our right, sunlight glints off the stunning aquamarine sea; on our left it flickers through thick pockets of vegetation covering the near-vertical Ko‘olau cliffs. This drive is as breathtaking as it is hunger-inducing, so pit stops are a must … with some snacks, of course.

From Thursday to Sunday, Kualoa Ranch operates a small market featuring KualoaGrown products raised and cultivated on the 4,000-acre property. You may have seen KualoaGrown shrimp or oysters on a menu in town, but for the best price, you’ll need to visit the source. We found whole briskets perfect for smoking on the Traeger, and even links of Portuguese sausage. Tropical house plants, rare fruits, frozen bananas, packaged vegetables and crispy beef jerky crisps, too. Our tip: Bring a cooler of ice and a trusty oyster shucker and you’re set for a well-deserved pau hana picnic.
