We choose the route of the sane: We pay a first visit to the new Beretania Safeway 12 hours later, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Here’s what we find.

First look: The facts
1234 Beretania St.
Smack next door to Times Supermarket.
Built on old Schuman Carriage site to replace old Safeway further down Beretania.
At 65,000 square feet, up there with Safeway Kapahulu as the largest Safeway in Hawaii and more than double the size of the old Safeway Beretania.
Open 24 hours.
Includes a Bank of Hawaii, American Savings Bank, Panda Cuisine and T-Mobile.
Has in-store Starbucks, sushi counter, deli, salad bar.
Most of the 244 parking stalls are underneath the store at street level.
