“Is It Worth It?” April 2012
Writer Tiffany Hill examined the question of whether Hawaii’s great weather and rich culture outweigh the high cost of living. Among the people she interviewed: Vanessa Katz, who gave up a job with international ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi, and all her New York City friends, to return to Hawaii.
We are the aforementioned best friends of Vanessa Katz. As infamously picky New Yorkers, we can testify that Vanessa is an extraordinary person, in every meaningful way, from near and afar. However, we prefer to have her nearer to us, back where she belongs. Thus, we are sending this little letter of love as a desperate plea to lure her back to the Big (albeit dirty) Apple. We come bearing gifts: thin-crust pizza from Spunto and cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine. We’re also not above blackmail and don’t mind posting our collection of late-night karaoke photos if she fails to comply. Vanessa, think about the offer—you have three different sofas to choose from. But, in the meantime, thank you for bringing a piece of paradise into our lives.

“A Degree of Homelessness,” April 2011
Writer Victoria Wiseman profiled three people who had enrolled in college despite the challenges of being homeless, including Malia Kaahumanu.
I just wanted to thank you folks for giving me the opportunity for sharing my story last year. The article was shared with a bunch of high-school students, friends and family. Till this day I am proud that I am still focused on my life. Thank you once again. This story inspired most of my friends because either they were thinking or were already heading in the direction of giving up on life. But this story of the three of us has changed their lives.

“Field Guide: Our Consuls” February 2012
Writer David Thompson took a tour of several international consulates around Honolulu. One, the Consulate of San Marino, a $10-million property on Kahala Avenue, he was unable to reach, by phone, email or in-person visit. Intrigued, we invited San Marino to call us if they saw the story in print.
We arrived back from a trip when we were informed about the article written in HONOLULU Magazine. We were not aware you were trying to contact us and apologize that the answering machine on our phone was not working. We also were not aware that the email address was not posted on the Consular Corps website, which is being updated by the secretary, Nina Fasi. We did not find the mentioned “post-it” note on our gate. We are a bit confused as to why this article was written in this manner.
