Like many people, I start my day with coffee. It’s become a ritual: I wake up, brush my teeth and make coffee. So when I was driving through town and noticed a new café called Everyday, the name automatically clicked.

The shop opened in September at the corner of Pi‘ikoi and South King streets, where the old Bakery & Table used to be. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming; natural light flows through giant windows, and couches and booths fill the room. Here’s what I found.

The concept

Everyday offers carefully sourced coffees, matcha and hojicha. Espresso and pourovers use single-origin Ethiopian and Guatemalan beans from New Order, a small-batch coffee roasting company in Michigan. The matcha is ceremonial-grade, the hojicha powder is organic and milks are seed-oil-free. The menu includes traditional café staples such as espresso ($4), americano ($5), cortado ($5), cappuccino ($6–$8) and lattés ($7–$8). There are two signature drinks—more on these below.

The owner, Steele Dubar, is a former UH Rainbow Warrior who suffered several injuries during his football career. To help aid recovery, he started using saunas and ice baths. He wants to repurpose the top floors of the Everyday building for health and wellness, but in the meantime, as a coffee lover, he opened the café with high-quality, organic options.

The Lineup

The Guatemalan espresso ($5) is my favorite drink here. As a former barista, I am really impressed. With nutty, chocolatey notes and a sweet finish, the espresso is thick and luxurious. The crema (espresso foam) is rich but not too heavy.

Naturally, I can’t go somewhere new without trying the signature drink. At Everyday, this is (of course) The Everyday ($7). Served with a milk base and cream top, it features your choice of espresso, matcha or hojicha. I choose espresso—it’s the house espresso—with oat milk and a house-made coconut cream top. The espresso is medium roast with notes of chocolate, caramel and hazelnut; and the decadence of it pairs well with the richness of the milk and coconut. The other signature drink, the Cloud ($8), replaces the milk base with coconut water.

I get excited every time I see a single-origin bean. The Ethiopian pour over ($5) is complex and bright, with fruity and floral notes. I add a hint of oat milk for thickness, but if you’re a black coffee lover, it’s perfect just the way it is.

As a matcha fan, I also have to try the matcha at every café that features it, and Everyday is no different. At many cafés, matcha can be diluted; here, the matcha latte ($8) is smooth yet powerful, earthy and clear. I get mine with oat milk and maple syrup, but there’s plenty of room to adjust it to your personal taste.

There’s free parking next to the store and additional parking on South King Street. I hear there are plans to open a Lava Wellness Center upstairs with an ice bath and sauna, so one day, you’ll be able to get your caffeine fix and relax your mind and body all at once.
