Editor’s Page: There’s Something About a Team

The holidays are a time of indulgence. So please indulge me.

In every issue, I use this page to introduce you to the stories you’re about to read. And there is so much to experience in December: Don Wallace’s guide to surfing at the 2020 Olympics; Jayna Omaye’s profiles and photographer Aaron K. Yoshino’s portraits of our local 100th Battalion, 442nd and Military Intelligence Service veterans; Brie Thalmann’s looks at an airy new local line and a Valentino showstopper; Stacey Makiya’s walk through a comfy new home store; Katrina Valcourt’s musings on Honolulu’s crosswalks; Robbie Dingeman’s tips to keep your poinsettias alive and news of a fun Christmas choral performance; Katie Kenny’s roundup of December events; Martha Cheng’s picks for an all-local charcuterie board; and Mari Taketa’s tale of a feast 19 years in the making. You can find their official titles, and contributing editor James Charisma, on the masthead. You can feel their passion through their words.

Creative director James Nakamura and his team of art directors including Christine Labrador, Shelley Shiroma and Janelle Kalawe-Ching, along with photographers David Croxford and Aaron, transform our words into complex visual works. Copy editor Elroy Garcia ensures the words are correct (and fixes my errant semicolons). Cathy Cruz-George takes care of HONOLULU Family magazine. Associate publisher and sales director Donna Kodama-Yee takes care of pretty much everyone who has anything to do with any part of HONOLULU. Her team of Donnie Ford, Michelle Stofle, Kerri Mokulehua and Pui-Heng Tang keeps in touch with the community of advertisers we are proud to partner with. And contribute story ideas, too. Marketing director Christy Davis and her team of Marisa Heung and Enjy El-Kadi create, produce and tell the world about our multiple events and every issue of every magazine. Audience circulation director Chuck Tindle and Gaylyn Laikona make sure those magazines reach readers’ hands and answer all your questions. And for the past 10 years, publisher Alyson Helwagen has supported us all. She recently returned to Ohio to be with her family.

In December, it is traditional to spend time and be thankful for our families. This is mine at HONOLULU. And we wish you all a wonderful holiday season.
