Eating through Los Angeles

Ah, the wonders of Twitter. I’ve met so many new and different people through social media — especially Twitter — over the last four years, and not just in Hawaii. One of those people is Jay Terauchi (@Chef_Jay), who has Hawaii ties but is really rooted in Los Angeles. Through him, I’ve been able to meet even more interesting people in his network, and seeing parts of the city through his eyes gives me a unique perspective.

Oh, and by the way, Jay can eat. Like us Hawaii foodies, he knows the best places (highbrow and lowbrow) for whatever you’re craving. So I spent two days in L.A., eating my way through the city with him, zig-zagging across several zip codes to have cupcakes, shave ice, pizza, xiao long bao, tapas, and more. Here’s a summary (!!!) of what we did, and even at that, I’ve left photos out because there was too much. Next time you go to L.A., I hope you get to try these places, too.

First stop: visiting Jay’s friend, Annette Starbuck, who was the winner of the Food Networks’ Cupcake Wars. This place is an explosion of pink and glitter!

We also visited his friend, Nina Rodecker, who owns Tasty Clouds, a gourmet cotton candy company. You can actually buy her stuff at Boardwalk in Ala Moana Center, but it’s so much more fun to try the flavors with her. If you are in Los Angeles and want to sample her wares, call a day ahead of time.

Neat, huh? Now you know why I’ve been working out like crazy at the YMCA! Big mahalo to Jay for taking me around, and eating with me, for two days straight.
