Discontinuities Preview

Fans of science fiction films will have the opportunity to watch and discuss five classics of the genre at Discontinuities, a film series to be held this week at R/D in Kaka`ako. Presented by Benjamin Trevino and Michael McDermott, Discontinuities will showcase the following five films:

Tuesday, Aug. 27, 7:15 p.m. – “Gattaca”

Wednesday, Aug. 28, 7:15 p.m. – “1984”

Thursday, Aug. 29, 7:15 p.m. – “Children of Men”

Friday, Aug. 30, 7:15 p.m. – “Moon”

Saturday, Aug. 31, 5:15 p.m. – “Sunshine”

Trevino says he chose to showcase the sci-fi genre because of its ability to elicit heavy dialogue. “There are lots of interesting discussions to be had, starting with the definition of the genre. And so many fascinating ideas and premises have been explored by science fiction, we think people will really have a lot they can take away from the series,” he says. This ability to spur conversation and debate, as well as a film’s entertainment value were the criteria in selecting the five films.

Each film will also be accompanied by a collection of critical essays written by local journalists, scholars, artists and film lovers as well as a panel discussion to invite thoughts and feedback from the audience. Trevino hopes that a positive reception to this film series will lead to similar events in the future, possibly even showing films that will allow for engagement with local creative communities including architects and urban planners.
