Dinner at Dew Drop Inn

I have to preface this blog by explaining that Dew Drop Inn was a last minute choice, albeit a good one. The secret Chinese Dinner Society had originally intended to go to Wah Kung, but when Chairman Bixby Ho tried to make reservations for a party of 10, they said we had to provide a 20 percent deposit. He explained that we weren’t ordering a pre-set banquet table; we were ordering off the menu, so there was no way we could figure out 20 percent of a mystery number.

Wah Kung wouldn’t budge. So we yanked our hopeful reservation. What Chinese restaurant turns down business from a Chinese party of 10?

Dew Drop Inn was very accommodating, even when our group swelled to 15. Funny thing is, for many of us (like me) it was our first time, whereas others said they used to eat there all the time. Verdict: we’d go again, for the stuff we liked and the specials we missed. Here’s what we ate:

Since it was my first time at Dew Drop Inn, I didn’t know there wasn’t much parking. Make sure you leave time to find parking on the street. Or at Safeway. (Shh.)

At the end, Jennifer Lieu (@Jlieu) raved that it was the best Chinese food she had eaten in a long time — it was tasty, not greasy, and a variety that she had not seen before. We think that most Chinese food here is geared toward southern fare; Dew Drop Inn is more northern (with a Taiwanese twist), so that probably caught her attention. What do you think?

By the way, for you October babies, here’s a special video of Jennifer and Danny (@wangchungs) singing happy birthday in Chinese:
