Did this: The Empty Bowl Project

Last night, as part of Slow Art Friday, thousands of people flocked to Chinatown to support The Empty Bowl Project, a fundraiser for Hawaii Meals on Wheels and the River of Life Mission.
Twenty A-list restaurants were asked to donate 10 gallons of soup (and staff to serve it) for the event. Organizers said that every restaurant agreed without question, and others who were not part of it, asked to participate next time. Gourmet soups came from Alan Wong’s, Big City Diner, Brasserie Du Vin, Cafe Laufer, Great Life Cuisine, Indigo, JJ Bistro & French Pastry, Le Bistro, Mariposa at Neiman Marcus, Murphy’s Bar & Grill, Phuket Thai, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Side Street Inn, Stage, Tango Contemporary Cafe & Market, Tiki’s Grill & Bar, 3660 on the Rise, Town, 12th Avenue Grill and Whole Foods.
Pauahi Street fronting ARTS at Mark’s Garage was closed down for the block party-style gathering, with entertainment and a small bar. The crowd was pretty concentrated, but my Twitter friends and I managed to get a few photos.
The Empty Bowl Project
Empty Bowl Project started in Michigan in the 1990s and has become an international grass roots effort to fight hunger.
“The first year we did this in 2009, we sold more than 700 bowls in an hour and 42 minutes,” said Hawaii event spokeswoman Beryl Ono. “We had only one cashier and we didn’t know what to expect. The line was so long, but people were willing to wait for their bowl of soup.”
