Did this: Maui Foodbank’s “Blue Hawaii”

A lot of us have heard about the Hawaii Foodbank, which services Oahu, but not to many have heard about the Maui Foodbank. The organization is not as big as Oahu’s, but the need is no less great. There are a lot of needy and homeless people on the Valley Isle who have to rely on such services to get their next meal.
Oddly enough, they don’t do any events for their fundraising — this was their very first one. Maui Foodbank Executive Director Marlene Rice said they met their goal of $60,000 for the night, and was pleased at the additional exposure for their cause in social media. The event benefitted a specific program, Backpack Buddies, which provides backpacks of packaged food to needy children on the weekends so they have something to eat. For many needy kids, the school lunch is their only meal of the day, and the backpack helps them survive the weekend without going hungry.
One of the featured speakers was Jessica Griffiths, a young girl who operates Maui Girlz Shave Ice at the swap meet with her sister Christina. They donated the profits from their shave ice stand to the Maui Foodbank … next time you go to the swap meet and are looking for a snack, remember what these selfless girls do for their community.
Here’s a quick look at how the night went. We’re looking forward to the Maui Foodbank’s next big event!
