Kakaako yesterday, broiling under a hot sun, and yet an estimated 4,000-plus turn out for the Great Hawaiian Lunch Wagon Festival. The lineup: 21 lunch wagons and street food vendors, most not yet seen at the monthly Eat the Street food truck rallies.

So what’s the difference between a lunch wagon and a food truck? Good question. In general food trucks are a newer breed — as in, appearing on these shores since last year — and they move around, tweeting and Facebooking their daily locations. Lunch wagons? More traditional, local-style, and serving plate lunch-type food, operative word being lunch.

Trucks, wagons, carts: all kinds show up at Kakaako Waterfront Park yesterday. Here’s a look at the players, the food and the scene.
