Cooking up support for REHAB
I went to a nonprofit event the other night that was an interesting approach to a community partnership, and it’s a pretty good idea in the current real estate market. As the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) celebrates its 60th anniversary, Riggs Distributing, Inc. — the distributor of Sub-Zero and Wolf products in Hawaii — announced that it will donate $100 for every one of their appliances purchased in Hawaii from October 1 through the end of 2013.
Sub-Zero and Wolf products are pretty expensive, so I’m not sure how many they can sell in that time, but the real estate market here keeps showing sales increases every month, which means there are more people in the market for appliances. If you’re going to buy something nice, might as well make it for a good cause, right?
Riggs Distributing and REHAB brought chef D.K.Kodama and J.J. Reinhart in to Cookspace Hawaii to make a few items, not just to be festive but to show how quickly the appliances can cook … if you’re in the market for them. There’s no doubt, if you’re busy, these will help cut your cooking time and turn out better dishes. D.K. even showed us how quickly something as simple as a scrambled egg could be done. Here’s a look at the demo and some of the items they made:

Other than the appliances, REHAB displayed some pottery made by one of their patients. Long story short, Kurt Tateishi was a construction foreman who sustained a brain injury on the job. Through treatment at REHAB, he re-discovered his love for pottery and makes beautiful pieces for sale.
