Where Time Stands Still: Andy’s Sandwiches & Smoothies

Opened 48 years ago, the Mānoa icon is beloved for its made-to-order sandwiches with tons of fresh veggies.

Located along East Mānoa Road since 1977, Andy’s Sandwiches & Smoothies serves up exactly what its name promises—delicious made-to-order sandwiches and smoothies.

I’ve been coming to Andy’s my whole life. As a kid, I used to visit my grandma in Mānoa, then lived in the neighborhood from middle school to college. I’m still here all the time to see my parents. Andy’s is where I head to for reasonably priced, filling and healthy breakfasts and lunches. (Yes, you can get a smoked ‘ahi melt at 7 a.m. when they open!)

The sandwiches are definitely the main attraction. My favorites are the smoked ‘ahi or turkey melts, both served on whole wheat bread with Andy’s signature papaya seed dressing and a medley of carrots, sprouts, lettuce and tomato. Along with the sandwiches, I like the vegetarian Papa Tostada taco salad as well as the smoothies, blueberry turnovers and cookies.

Founders Andy and Norma Rodrigues are still working at Andy’s Sandwiches & Smoothies along with younger generations of their family. Besides all the tasty meals and snacks I’ve had there over the years, seeing their warm smiles when they greet me always reminds me that I’m home again.

Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., 2904 E Mānoa Road, andyssandwiches.com
