“You
look like a million bucks,” goes the expression. Fortunately, with today’s clothing
options, you don’t have to spend that million. After all, style is more than a
price tag-it’s an attitude and a way of creating an ensemble with confidence.
We challenged ourselves to create four beautiful outfits at real-life price points,
from $100 to $1,000. Crunching the numbers proved to be an intriguing, yet ultimately
successful, mission. Of course, a little shopping know-how helps. “Investing
in timeless classics may cost you more initially, but over time you spend less
money, because you buy fewer clothes,” advises Lisa George, a special services
manager at Macy’s By Appointment at Ala Moana Center. As a professional personal
shopper, she says it’s helpful when clients create a realistic budget. “Think
about what you want to accomplish,” she adds, “and what clothing is already in
your closet to build on.” Two other tips: It’s OK to spend less on trendy,
one-season items, but invest in quality shoes, as they are the only item of clothing
that can cause permanent damage if they are ill-fitting. And don’t skimp on skin
care. “You will pay for it later if you don’t take care of your skin now,” says
George. “It’s especially true for women, but also for men.” For fall 2004, George
notes that, “Sweater twinsets are really big. We’re really making the full turnaround
to business wear and suiting.” Whatever clothing you purchase this fall,
