Buying back the beach

As many of you know, the Nonstop team is active in the realm of social media. We blog, we tweet and Facebook, all in the name of sharing things with our network and driving traffic to our site — the way most people use these online tools. Sometimes, social media is used by organizations in the most interesting ways.

This weekend, I’m headed to Maui to attend an annual fundraising luau for the Maui Coastal Land Trust (MCLT) called “Buy Back The Beach.” The social media community there used their influence to raise awareness of the event, resulting in strong ticket sales early on. MCLT is also 10 this year, making it a doubly significant occasion.

This year is also a big turning point for them, since the MCLT recently merged with the Kauai Public Land Trust, the Oahu Public Land Trust, and the Hawaii Island Land Trust to form a single entity — the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust — and Maui is the new organization’s headquarters.

When they asked me to come to Maui to blog about the event and “live tweet” with the social media team, I couldn’t refuse. So if you follow me on Twitter and Facebook, be watching for my updates on Saturday night. I’ll also have a blog on Monday to better describe the event, which will feature the cuisine of renowned Maui chefs: Ben Klein, Mala Ocean Tavern; James McDonald, Pacific’O; Peter Merriman, Merriman’s Kapalua; Ivan Pahk, Cane and Taro; Tom Muromoto, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel; and Sheldon Simeon, Star Noodle.

There may be some tickets left if you’d like to join us. Otherwise, clear the airwaves!…and I’ll see you online.
