Zodiac identity crisis

No doubt you’ve heard about the new zodiac calendar announced by The Minnesota Planetarium Society last week. Like with many people, my sign changed, so I went from being an Aquarius to a Capricorn. I’ve never really put much weight into astrology. Occasionally, I would look up my horoscope, and that’s it. Still, I’ve identified myself as being an Aquarius. Now that I’m apparently a Capricorn, I don’t really know what to think.
According to a newsletter sent out by local astrologer and life guidance coach, Alice Inoue, what The Minnesota Planetarium Society doesn’t tell you is that, “The movement addresses the sidereal zodiac, which is used by Eastern astrologers, and is based on the constellations.” Inoue goes on to explain that, “Western astrologers use the tropical zodiac, which is based on the seasons… the perspective of all astrological systems is to look at the whole picture, so the article is neither comprehensive nor fair to Eastern astrologers.”
As for the new 13th sign, Ophiuchus, Inoue writes, “Ophiuchus or Serpentarius has always been there. Whether or not it is included in the zodiac line up depends on the perspective from which one looks at the sky. Astrologers have been discussing this constellation at astrological conferences for years. It is definitely not ‘new news’ and does not change what you know about your astrological sign.”
Apparently, this whole “New Zodiac” has been blown out of proportion by both traditional and social media. However, the story is out there, and there are arguments both in support of it and against it. So, do we keep the zodiac calendar that we are all familiar with, or do we all have to start looking up new horoscopes? Who decides? Is there a some sort of astrology governing body that determines this? Will newspapers start printing an Ophiuchus horoscope? But most importantly, if the zodiac calendar is changed, how many people in the world will now have the wrong sign tattooed on their body? Whether or not the new calendar by astronomer Parke Kunkle is adopted, and from what I’ve read online, it probably won’t, I’m sticking with Aquarius. But just in case, I’m going to pass on getting an Aquarius tattoo.
Has you’re zodiac sign changed under the new calendar?
