‘Hawaii Five-O’ Recap: ‘A`ale Ma`a Wau’

After the terrific Season 4 premiere, I was really looking forward to see if the next show could maintain its newfound momentum. Verdict? So far, so good. Once again, the show was able to balance all the major characters, while also delivering comedic moments and fine action sequences (nothing like the premiere, but we can’t expect that kind of mayhem every week). If this keeps up, I’ll actually get to enjoy an hour out of my usually pathetic Friday night routine of drinking alone, lamenting the lack of a life. Hey, don’t judge!

Here’s my look at this week’s The Good, The Bad and The Weird

h50-01The Good

  • As clichéd as it was, I enjoyed the comedy in the opening little league baseball scene. Kamekona is one umpire I wouldn’t wanna mess with.
  • McGarrett’s car had that old school brown leather steering wheel wrap. I haven’t seen one of those in decades. That’s really OG.
  • McG and Wo Fat are NOT brothers. Thank goodness. I’m so relieved that the writers didn’t go that cheap route. So what exactly is their relationship then?
  • Love the new table computer. Its screen is almost as big as the Samsung Galaxy Note III.
  • Speaking of new, how’s Chin’s hair? I dug it!
  • Tim Daly guest stars as Harper, Texas Ranger. Not the most charismatic actor but he did a fine job.

The Bad

  • Only three Chinese bumpkins are sent in to kill off Kono, a 5-0 agent, and her boyfriend who’s former yakuza. Please. And Adam, don’t let your girl do all the dirty work! Step in there and throw a punch or something!
  • Harper really shouldn’t wear those cowboy boots when flying. Those have to take forever to take off and put back on at the security line. And I thought cowboys were practical folk.
  • You should never let your girlfriend work with her ex, especially one she’s chummy with. No matter how secure you are in the relationship, why even invite the chance of trouble like that?
  • If Tom Akuna truly is a local boy, he shouldn’t be wearing his shoes in the house.
  • What is this? A police show or a Camaro commercial?

h50-02The Weird

  • Even if rats really like peanut butter, slathering the guy with it doesn’t really seem like torture. I’m thinking that the rats would just lick the stuff off his body, giving him a cleaning he looks like he needs anyway.
  • “She’s not only my daughter. She’s my life.” – Harper, Texas Ranger. For some reason I heard “wife” instead of “life” and started wondering what kind of twisted redneck this Harper guy was. Thank goodness for close captions.
  • Did anyone notice McG’s eyes when he and Harper, Texas Ranger barged in on Akuna in the shower? His eyes were definitely checking out Akuna’s nether regions south of the piko. Hmm, maybe that’s why he’s willing to let Catherine go work with her ex.
  • Chin tells the kid about to get his girlfriend back that “Everything’s gonna be fine.” White boy in Waimanalo? Yeah, I don’t think so.
  • Why was Harper, Texas Ranger’s daughter kneeling like that instead of sitting or lying down comfortably when they found her in the container? Was she looking for Mecca and about to pray for her release?
