5 Free Events in Honolulu in March 2019

Start March with a free fashion show featuring the work of one of Hawai‘i's well-known artists, walk through an art exhibit in the park and end the month with a walk on the wild side.

Hawai‘i State Art Museum spotlights different local artists at this monthly event. On March 1, watch a fashion show featuring Robyn Yim Pang of RYP Designs’ first line of aloha shirts in collaboration with artist Satoru Abe, set to music by singer-songwriter Tim Rose in the outdoor sculpture garden. You can also listen to a performance by the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony alumni on the second floor and visit the regular museum galleries, which will stay open late. On the ground floor, you can peruse the HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI, drop in to a screen-printing demo, watch a live painting and enjoy more live music. If you get hungry, we have good news—Artizen will be open.

91^st Annual Lei Court Selection Event 2019

Before the 92^nd Annual Lei Day Celebration at Kapi‘olani Park on May 1, comes the selection of the Lei Court. And you can meet some of the contestants in Kapolei. The ambassadors of aloha who preside over the celebration are selected from one of four age groups every year. In 2019, the court will be be from the Na ʻOpio (Youth, which is 18 to 30 years) category. Contestants will be evaluated in lei-making, hula ʻauana (modern hula), English and Hawaiian language, and poise and personality. One contestant will be crowned Lei Queen. The first Lei Queen, Nina Bowman, was crowned in 1928.

Transcendients: Immigrant Stories of Place by Terasaki Exhibitions

Friday, March 8–Sunday, March 17

Walk through a 150-foot-long art installation that includes walls of vapor, stories and portraits in the park across from the Honolulu Museum of Art. Artist Taiji Terasaki’s project took photos submitted by the public and turned them into this traveling exhibit examining the lives and histories of immigrants. While you visit, be prepared for your picture to be taken and added to the gallery. Visit on Sunday, March 10 for the Celebration of Immigrant Communities (4–8 p.m.), which will including food trucks and keiki activities. Terasaki Exhibitions plans to take the exhibit to the Mainland in 2020.

Bank of Hawai‘i Family Sunday: Points of View

You may spend the evening drinking green beer, but St. Patrick's Day starts with a family-friendly event (which comes with free admission) at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Family Sunday. View Aotearoa/New Zealand artist Lisa Reihana’s In Pursuit of Venus video installation, check out the interactive magnet wall inside the Arts of Hawaiʻi gallery and make a magnet with your keiki. The Hawai‘i Youth Symphony will provide entertainment. When you’re done at the museum, take the free shuttle bus to the free Family Day at Spalding House in Makiki Heights. Kids can express their perception of themselves through crafting a watercolor self-portrait.

4^th Annual Walk on the Wild Side 2019

Did you know that over 198,000 people in Hawai‘i have kidney disease? March is National Kidney Month and the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaiʻi is hosting its annual Walk on the Wild Side. There will be live entertainment, children’s activities, free vision and kidney screenings, performances at the Hawai‘i Theatre and more. Join the historical mystery walk ($25) and you’ll get to learn more about the landmarks and culture of the Chinatown area. Each will receive a swag bag of prizes valued at more than $100.
