With multiple locations on O‘ahu, ‘Ahi & Vegetable is an accessible stop when you’re on the go. Their ‘ahi poke bentos and refreshing salads topped with sashimi satisfy me for the whole day, but after learning they recently started happy hour, I had to stop by for pau hana.
ʻAhi & Vegetable announced the opening of its third location in ‘Ewa, expanding west from its shops in Ala Moana and Kapālama. The happy hour deals are only available at the Kapālama Shopping Center location from 2 to 6 p.m. daily. They also started $38 all-you-can-eat sushi and appetizers on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 8 p.m.
$7 to $9 Menu
It’s rare to find menu items under $10 nowadays, but ‘Ahi & Vegetable’s list is extensive. It includes shoyu ‘ahi poke, ‘ahi sashimi and salmon sashimi, all $9 a serving, while cooked appetizers are $7 each. Our favorites include chicken karaage and tempura shrimp fried to order. The tray of chicken karaage is large enough to be an entree–we never get to the bottom of it.

We also get orders of hamachi sashimi ($9) and chicken wing dings ($7). The wing dings are fried crunchy, and the thick slices of sashimi are served on a paper plate with ginger and wasabi on the side.

Nigiri and gunkan sushi
Nigiri is priced from $3.50 to $7 a pair, and I beeline for the salmon ($4), unagi ($5) and hamachi ($6). It’s shocking how thick the cuts are, especially the hamachi and salmon. They’re so big, you can’t see the rice underneath. The unagi nigiri is my favorite because the kabayaki sauce drizzle balances the savory flavors with a hint of sweetness. I always have to order a few of these.

Gunkan sushi, or sushi wrapped with seaweed that looks like a battleship, are filled with ikura and spicy ‘ahi and tend to fill me up quickly.
With the right mix of sashimi, sushi and appetizers, you and a friend can have a decent $40 pau hana at ‘Ahi & Vegetable.
