R/D reopens after 5-week renovation
Ugh. It happened again.
It's almost lunchtime and you got absolutely nothing done. Seriously, you're like the guy from Memento - the last few hours are a complete blur.
Quick, grab a pen, or a tattoo artist, and take note: R/D, your favorite neighborhood workspace, is back open.
You may not recognize it. Don't worry, that's not the work of your short-term memory loss, but of R/D, Interisland Terminal and Tadpole Studio, who spent the last five weeks redesigning and renovating the Kakaako space.
You'll spot the difference as soon as you walk in: the room feels brighter, open. That's because the front half of the ceiling was torn down to expose a second-story window and Quonset hut ceiling, signature of '50s-era factories and warehouses. The cork floor? Also gone; the original concrete floor finished instead.
A fresh retail space greets you at the door, a strategic move to attract unsuspecting passersby. Oblige by heading for the wooden shelves and perusing 120 thoughtfully curated book titles, including Pleats Please by Japanese designer Issey Miyake and Things We Made by design team Roman and Williams (Kate Hudson and Gwenyth Paltrow are clients). Then, pick up a Moleskin notebook, adorable Poketo animal bookmark tabs or colorful Japanese washi tape by Kamoi Kakoshi before heading around back.
This is where your creative juices start to flow. Grab a latte, sandwich or freshly-baked scone from Morning Glass Coffee and take a seat at one of the tables, which, like almost every fixture and installation in the space, was custom-made from recycled wood, old bed frames and spare supplies. Set up your laptop, log onto the free Wifi and get to work.
If you need a break, wander over to ii Gallery, now a fully-connected adjacent space, and sneak a peek at its newest exhibition, Lines in Time by master weaver Marques Marzan, before its grand opening on Thursday.
Finally, celebrate your newfound productivity tonight at R/D's Refresh fundraiser and grand reopening. Enjoy food by Hank's Haute Dogs, The Pig and the Lady and The Whole Ox Deli, desserts by Prima and Hangar One cocktails by Imbibe Hawaii.
Don't forget to take plenty of Polaroids.
R/D's Refresh fundraiser is tonight, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at 691 Auahi St. Tickets cost $80 ($40 tax-deductible) and are available here. Regular hours are Tuesdays-Fridays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit R/D on Facebook.
