The perfect bottle of wine to go with it? Uhh...
Face it, your Valentine's Day setup isn't complete until you stick a cork in it. Unfortunately, finding the right wine to celebrate your relationship can be a challenge. So we turned to Patrick Okubo, master sommelier at Young's Market Company of Hawaii, for recommendations based on relationship status rather than food.
Here's to your perfect pairing.
1// Perfect Strangers (0-6 months)
You're still getting to know each other and don't want to spend a lot of money.
Recommendation: Elio Perrone, Bigaro
Flavor profile: Strawberry soda pop
"Even wine pros with serious palates can't deny that the Elio Perrone, Bigaro is delicious. Sweet, pink and bubbly, it pairs great with strawberries and whipped cream. Take it out on a picnic for a romantic meal that isn't too presumptuous. Plus, it has a screw cap, so you don't have to pack your own corkscrew."
2// Over the Honeymoon (6 months-1 year)
You're in relationship bliss and looking to pull out all the stops.
Recommendation: Domaine Serene, Evenstad Reserve, Pinot Noir
Flavor profile: Rich strawberry, white chocolate, hint of cinnamon and vanilla spice
"It's time to take out a serious wine that's going to impress you. The Domaine Serene, Evenstad Reserve, Pinot Noir will leave a lasting impression and make the occasion memorable. It's soft and smooth with very little tannins and bite. Pair it with braised beef or poultry."
3// The Drone Age (1-5 years)
You're in a relationship rut and ready to spice things up.
Recommendation: Montepeloso, A Quo
Flavor profile: Blackberry, bing cherry and chocolate spice with robust tannins
"If you want something new and adventurous, the Montepeloso, A Quo is a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet. Share it while planning your next trip to Tuscany to visit this winery together."
4// On Bended Knee (5+ years)
You want to take things to the next level, which (hint, hint) involves a ring.
Recommendation: Domaine Carneros, Brut Rose
Flavor profile: Orange blossom and strawberry with a crisp, refreshing tingle
"You need a wine that isn't ultra-expensive, so you can pop a bottle for every anniversary. Domaine Carneros, Brut Rose is perfect, valued so you can drink this year after year. Pair it with raw oysters and salmon, which I know you're going to cook up at home. By the way, it's only a short plane ride to California away and does a great tour if you ever want to really relive the memory."
