Grand Cafe and Bakery closed, HASR Bistro to open in Honolulu Chinatown space

Grand Cafe closed a few weeks ago; in its place will be HASR Bistro. In the kitchen: chef Rodney Uyehara, formerly of Beachhouse at the Moana Surfrider, and before that, The Bistro at Century Center. Terry Kakazu, owner of HASR Wine Co. next door and the upcoming bistro, says the menu will be country-style French, "fine dining-style food, affordable prices. We'd rather have everybody come more often than not." Menu items will include French onion soup, beef cassoulet and steak tartare. Also expect wine-paired prix fixe menus, changing weekly. HASR Bistro plans to open for lunch and dinner, and some time down the line, for afternoon tea as well.

The best part of a bistro next to a wine shop? The corkage fee will be waived if you purchase wine at HASR Wine Co.

The target open date is mid-August to September.

So why is HASR opening a restaurant? "I've been wanting to," Kakazu says. "I was just sitting back and waiting until the time was right. Obviously, I had to have the right chef, and it just so happened that Rodney is available." She and Uyehara have collaborated in the past on wine dinners. "If it wasn't for Rodney I wouldn't even try to open this restaurant. He's the only chef that can make it work."

In the meantime, Grand Cafe is looking for a new space to open in.
