August events: chef demos, Latin Nights, and Haleiwa farmers market returns

Get ready for August, with demos, dinners and drinks:

  • Sit in on cooking lessons from top chefs like Roy Yamaguchi, Ed Kenney of Town and Nancy Silverton of Mozza in LA with Macy’s Hawaii Food and Wine Festival Chef Series, held at the demonstration kitchen at Macy’s Ala Moana.
    The upcoming schedule:
    August 4: Roy Yamaguchi, demo-ing Big Island Kulana beef dish with a sous-vide egg and Japanese caviar.
    August 18: Ed Kenney
    September 1: Mark Noguchi
    September 8: Nancy Silverton
  • Haleiwa Farmers’ Market returns … except in Waimea Valley, with a new day and new time. The Haleiwa market was asked to vacate in April; it reopens August 9, Thursday, from 3 – 7 p.m., in Waimea Valley’s Pikake Pavilion.
     
  • Baja Style food truck and Street Grindz team up for Latin Nights pop-up dinners August 9-11. The dinner will be small-plates style—15 bites including atun ahumado, smoked ahi tuna with poblano chile and crema Mexicana; chicharrones cubana, citrus and garlic infused roasted pork belly; barbacoa de birria, stewed goat with red chile; tamale with smoked chicken and huitlacoche, otherwise known as corn smut. It’s a fungus that grows on corn, and it grows well here in Hawaii. Windy Aubrey of Baja Style found a Waimanalo farm that’s happy to sell her this previously unwanted blight. It has a delicate mushroom flavor, and in the tamale, it’s delicious.

  • A fruit with the texture of a pear and flavor of brown sugar? It’s chico, also known as sapodilla. Exotic fruit grower Ken Love teams up with Whole Foods again, to showcase lesser-known, equally tasty tropical fruits. Love and food writer Wanda Adams will sample the fruit and show you how to cook with it at Whole Foods Kailua.

  • The Kahala celebrates Julia Child's 100th birthday all month with special menus, afternoon tea and French cooking classes. The headlining event is a five-course dinner benefiting the James Beard Foundation, featuring Kahala chefs Wayne Hirabayashi and Michael Moorhouse, Colin Hazama of the Sheraton Waikiki and Ryan Loo of W Hotel Seattle.

  • Opa! The Greek Festival returns August 25-26. Get your ouzo on, and between the gyros and spanokopita, make sure you save room for dessert: loukoumades (Greek malassadas) and a tantalizaing array of Greek pastries.
