North Shore Greek Food Truck Serves ‘Ono and Fresh Mediterranean Food

Super-fresh fare from Never on Sunday makes a great post-beach option.

Greek food lovers take note: The North Shore finally has an answer to town’s popular Olive Tree Café. Never on Sunday, a newish food truck located on the stretch of land between the roundabout and McDonald’s in Hale‘iwa town, is serving up well-executed, fresh Mediterranean fare at reasonable prices.

 

We first heard about the truck—which gets its name from a 1960 Greek comedy/romance/drama—because Raul Bernal, the owner of The Garden Oven, a North Shore brick-oven pizza truck, sometimes buys handmade sausage from Never on Sunday as pizza topping. Getting that tip feels like being let in on a local secret.  

 

The limited menu offers a rotating cast of three or four items, each served either as a sandwich (rolled up in a pita with tomato, lettuce and tzatziki sauce) or on a platter (with a Greek salad, stuffed grape leaf, white rice, fresh pita and tzatziki sauce).

 

It’s hard to go wrong here. The lightly charred chicken souvlaki (spiced kebabs) are zesty and tender from a citrusy marinade. Bisteck, juicy and flavorful Greek-style hamburger patties, work especially well in the sandwich. The side salad, as part of the platters, is super fresh tasting, made with crisp peeled cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions and firm feta. Fresh garlic gives the tzatziki sauce an almost spicy edge.

 

For dinner orders, plan to get there on the early side. Popular choices, such as falafel or beef souvlaki, sell out well before closing time.
