Takeout Tip of the Day: Honolulu Burger Co.

Anyone who thinks burgers are basic has clearly never been to Honolulu Burger Co. This patty joint has more than a dozen specialty burgers on the menu, and when you consider all the customizations you can make—for example, you can choose between eight different cheeses, and four types of buns or substitute for salad instead—that equates to more delicious options than my terrible math skills can compute. Not only that, but Honolulu Burger Co. uses local, good-for-you ingredients such as organic aquaponic Mānoa lettuce from Mari’s Garden, tomatoes and onions from ‘Ewa Beach and Big Island beef that’s free-range, grass-fed, and hormone- and antibiotic-free. I can get behind that.

Honolulu Burger Co. Aloha Elvis Burger

THe Aloha Elvis Burger ($11.89), with hawaiian apple banana, peanut butter, bacon and guava jam.

For first-timers feeling overwhelmed by the choices, the Mushroom Mushroom burger and Loco Moco burger are two of Honolulu Burger Co.’s most popular orders at the moment. Or, go big and order one of its more intriguing creations such as the pastele lumpia burger, Mocha Java burger or—for the truly adventurous—the Aloha Elvis burger, made with Hawaiian apple banana, peanut butter, bacon and guava jam. (If you do order this, please tell me how it is.) And because burgers should never be eaten alone, turn this into an Aloha Fryday with a side of Honolulu Burger Co.’s ultra popular garlic fries, sweet potato fries (my personal favorite) or just good ol’ regular fries.
