You've Got Male
You prefer to shop local. You love supporting local designers, and with so many good ones to choose from, you pretty much always look amazing.
Sadly, dressing your man isn’t so simple. Beyond a couple of graphic t-shirt companies, Hawaii is almost devoid of locally produced menswear.
Or was. Three recently launched men’s lines are manning up and entering the fold with fresh takes on traditional aloha shirts, and newer, fashion forward men’s styles.
Turning Over A New Leaf
When asked how she would describe her new men’s line, beloved local designer Roberta Oaks replied, “left of hip.” She hits the nail on the head with a collection of shirts that’s a fun mix of old, new, fashion and funky. From the clean lines of her Sharp Shirts, to the relaxed old-timey aesthetic of the Maritime shirt, you’ll be tempted to snag him one of each. Roberta Oaks Showroom, 19 North Pauahi St., Chinatown. Hope For Man
Remember all those times you prayed he wouldn’t pick you up for your date wearing his old college sweatshirt? The angels at Muumuu Heaven heard you. Just released last Friday, their new collection of 250 reworked vintage aloha shirts is truly heaven sent. The collection is in collaboration with Dale Hope, founder of Kahala Sportswear, and is a 35-year retrospective on the history of the aloha shirt. From funky psychedelic colors, to shirts that pay homage to old Hawaii, the pieces in this collection are little wearable moments in history. Hope for Man is available at Muumuu Heaven, 767 Kailua Road, Kailua. For more info, call 808.263.3366.
Suit Yourself
If he’s good enough to do Grace Park’s hair, we’re betting he’s got the style chops needed to dress your man. Ritchie Miao, formerly of CHOP salon and now hairstylist to the stars, has a smash-hit clothing line in Asia, which he’s expanding to Hawaii. The line, called Lovelessizm, has an edgy, urban feel to it, with touches of lux details, like sterling silver shirt buttons. His soon-to-be-launched women’s line is in collaboration with Andy South, but for now, the guys get all the love. Lovelessizm is available at Acid Dolls in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, and at The Blue Buddah, 1221 Kapiolani Blvd., #111. Or you can set up a private shopping party by contacting lovelessizmhawaii@gmail.com.
