Made in Hawaiʻi Festival

Everything from children’s clothing to dog treats can be found this weekend at the Made in Hawaiʻi Festival, a three-day showcase of products that are assembled, made or produced in the Islands. In addition to the more than 400 exhibitors at the event, there will be chef demonstrations and live entertainment in the Arena and Pikake Room. A Korean Cinderella

Honolulu Theatre for Youth’s first show of the season begins this Friday, featuring a Korean take on the fairytale classic. Expect an entertaining mash-up of K-POP tunes with traditional Korean drumming and dancing. HTY’s story is about a girl, Kongji Park, who lives in her late father’s house under the tyranny of her stepmother, Sae Uhmuhni, and stepsister, Patji. When the Mayor’s office hosts a dance contest to find a date for himself, the story takes an unexpected turn. Please note that the keiki Onstage Workshop for this show is at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 24. The performance with American Sign Language interpretation is at 11 a.m. on Sept. 14.

Duke’s OceanFest

Surf’s up! Head to Waikīkī this week for surf contests and beachside entertainment honoring the late waterman Duke Kahanamoku and his legacy. This nine-day festival has two programs that keiki might enjoy: The Matson Menehune Surf Fest from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, and at 8 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 18; and the Going To The Dogs SurFur ComPETition at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20. All events take place on the beach, so slather on sunscreen, take picnic mats or beach towels, and consider bringing binoculars to see far distances. There are no food vendors at the event, but Waikīkī has plenty of family-friendly food options.

Bank of Hawaiʻi Family Sunday

At this month’s Family Sunday program at the Honolulu Museum of Art, keiki can go on a gallery scavenger hunt, make their own suncatchers and work with local artist Cade Roster to create board games. Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band (a blues band popular with local keiki) performs in the courtyard from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please note that this Sunday, there are no films shown in the auditorium, all kids’ activities end at 2 p.m., and the museum stays open through 4 p.m. Your family can also take the free shuttle van to Spalding House, where additional activities for keiki happen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well.

Last Picnic on the Pier

Summer is officially pau when the Mighty Mo hosts its final Picnic on the Pier of the season. This event—featuring tours of the battleship, live music on the deck, raffle prizes and family-friendly activities—ends in time to put your keiki to bed. Bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs, your own food and drinks, or buy dinner from ‘Ono Gourmet Food Trucks, which will be on-site. For safety reasons, please do not bring grills, tents, umbrellas and glass bottles.
