Attend: Hululani: Contemporary Featherwork Expressions

Fly on over to Bishop Museum this weekend for a bird’s-eye view of history at this featherwork-inspired festival. Explore the contemporary roles and variations of Hawai‘i’s  rich featherwork tradition through storytelling and hands-on demonstrations, then learn about High Chief Kalani‘ōpu‘u. Guests can “soar” through Hawai‘i’s native forests at the exhibits and enjoy Hawaiian food, entertainment and the rest of the galleries. Food trucks and a cash bar will be dishing out food and drinks.

Give: Girl Scout Flower Drive

Saturday, May 28, 9 a.m.

Give the Girl Scouts a hand this Memorial Weekend at the annual flower drive, where gals from across the island will be collecting flowers. The blooms will then be crafted into lei and taken to the Hawai‘i Memorial Ceremony on Memorial Day. Gather up some of your yard’s prettiest pieces, then drop them off at the Macy’s parking lot in Windward Mall. It’s one beautiful way to celebrate the holiday and give to a good cause—plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to pick some flowers?

We are suckers for local markets, especially ones that bring in local farmers, artists, live music, cocktails, yoga classes and … a pool party? Hey, we’ll take it! Turtle Bay Resort’s Mahina Market is being preceded by the Naked Turtle pool party at the Point Sunset and Pool Bar and has two major wins for us: the Naked Turtle team will be stocking sweet-sounding drinks such as the Turtle Bay Mangojito and the Blushing Turtle, and all proceeds from Naked Turtle Rum will go to support the Sea Turtle Conservancy to help save the turtles. After the Mahina Market itself, CorePower Yoga is offering a free live class while DJ Alissa Joe spins tunes. Ke Nui Kitchen and NS Kula Grille will serve food, while local vendors such as MojoBeebee Bikinis, Nak on Wood, Siren Booty, The Blonde Shark, Noho Designs and more will peddle their wares.

Attend: Hawai‘i Lantern Floating 2016

Talk about one seriously pretty way to end the long weekend on a loving and thoughtful note. Watching the lanterns float out at Ala Moana Beach Park is now a beloved tradition in the Islands, both as a beautiful way to remember loved ones and for the inspiring way the city comes together (like, really close together—don’t go if you don’t like crowds!). Do yourself a favor, though: Plan early and stake out your seat on the beach well before the 6:30 p.m. start time if you want to avoid at least some craziness that happens once the herds of onlookers descend.
