If you’re as into the spooking season as we are, then you know that it has a way of wreaking havoc on your skin. All that fake blood, face paint and rotting zombie flesh can leave you with some seriously scary dry patches and a ghoulishly gray glow.

So, for a bit of a treat, we turned to Romely Kahalulu Levezow of Makana Studios, maker of deliciously scented tropical soaps, bath salts and candles. Levezow whipped us up a recipe for a perfectly in-season D.I.Y. pumpkin latte body scrub using all of our favorite autumn elements: jack-o’-lanterns, coffee culture and sweet treats.

Think of it as the complexion-boosting version of a PSL. Made with ultra-moisturizing coconut oil, vitamin- and mineral-rich pumpkin purée, and natural exfoliants sugar, coffee grounds and cinnamon, Levezow’s concoction will be your new fallback beauty trick.

You’ll need

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin purée (canned or see fresh purée instructions below)

  • 1/4 cup coffee grounds

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (room temperature)

  • A pinch of cinnamon

  • Glass bowl

  • Mixing spoon

  • Plastic or glass jar with lid

  • 99 percent isopropyl alcohol

Prior to mixing, disinfect all utensils with alcohol, including glass bowl and glass jar and lid. Let dry. In glass bowl, mix pumpkin purée and coconut oil until well incorporated. Add coffee grounds, brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix well. Place in jar and store in refrigerator.

You’ll need a few extra supplies: small pumpkin, baking sheet, food processor or blender.

Slice pumpkin in half and scoop out all seeds and pulp. Slice pumpkin into 3-inch chunks, place on a baking sheet and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes or until tender. Peel off skin from chunks. In a food processor or blender, pulse skinned chunks until smooth. If pumpkin is too thick or dry, add water (approximately 1 tablespoon or more depending on desired consistency). Continue to pulse until smooth.

To Use:

Scoop out as much needed for one use, leaving the rest refrigerated for future uses. Gently scrub on body in circular motions. Avoid face and delicate areas. Take care as shower floor may get slippery. Rinse thoroughly. Because there are no preservatives in this recipe, avoid getting water into the jar and use within seven days.
