Where to See O‘ahu Homes Decked Out with Pretty Christmas Lights

O‘ahu gets lit for the holidays.

Hawai‘i may lack a true winter season, but there is no lack of true Christmas spirit. Every year, families and neighborhoods all over O‘ahu decorate their homes. Some really go all out to make the island merry, bright and full of aloha for all to enjoy. Here are some of our favorites from around the island.

Though way up on Mariner’s Ridge, this house doesn’t hide its holiday cheer. Giant letters, candles, candy canes and snowflakes wish all who visit a “Merry Christmas” and “Happy New Year.”

Honolulu

Located on the corner of Hau‘oli and Lime streets, this McCully home has two sides to show off. The collection of Christmas decorations is quite eclectic with doll-like models of Santa and Mrs. Claus, Big Bird and Elmo, gingerbread houses and a life-size rocking horse all encased within a border of colorful cone lights.

Kailua

255 Ku‘upua St.

With the chaos that has been 2017, this Kailua home spreads an important message this time of year. Alongside a glowing display of children from around the world are the words “peace on Earth” spelled out in lights.

Dubbed “Christmas Lane” by locals, almost every house on this street lights up in celebration of the holidays. The road is open for those who want to drive through, but we recommend ditching your car for a walk from end to end to see the generous decorations including inflatables from classic Christmas snowmen to a giant Hank, the octopus from Finding Dory. One house’s display encourages visitors to find Waldo among the multitude of painted characters; the house with the tall blue tree occasionally blows fake foam snow; and another house provides the perfect spot for your holiday photo shoot with a little white bench under a small decorated garden arbor.

Not far from “Christmas Lane” is a single home surrounded by handcrafted characters from Moana, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Happy Feet, The Little Mermaid and more.

‘Aiea

The whole front lawn of this home in ‘Aiea is covered in different classic winter figures that include Santa Claus, penguins on slides, smiling snowmen and polar bears. The result is a whimsical little field of lights.

Waikele

94-226 Anapau Place

Waikele Lights is famous on O‘ahu for its annual LED Christmas light show, synchronized to music and elaborate enough to have the road closed off during show times (7 to 9:30 p.m.). It attracts locals from all over the island and has been featured on ABC’s The Christmas Light Fight. This year, there are two shows that alternate daily. Each show lasts about 38 minutes before it repeats, sparking the crowd that’s gathered to count down each time it plays again. The music includes classics such as “Silent Night,” pop tunes such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and Frozen’s “Let It Go” for the keiki.

94-242 Hōpoe Place

While checking out the Waikele Lights, walk just one street over to find more Christmas spirit. Though modest in comparison, Hōpoe Place is known to light up as well. We found most decorations to be quaint and simple, and the street is much less crowded than its parallel, making it a nice place to snap some photos. This particular address has Star Wars themed décor and a nearby church group will occasionally swing by this home to provide some live Christmas music to your evening walk.
